After reading a brief article about Jay Dot Rain in Jet magazine I became intrigued by the Alabama artist. While browsing his Twitter page @jaydotrain I noticed he not only had a hot single "Dozen" but also a great marketing strategy. Jay Dot Rain gave his fans a dozen of Krispy Kreme donuts during various shows. Rap and food... It gets no better!
I had the pleasure of chatting with Jay Dot Rain with the release of his new mixtape The Dixie Renaissance... it's safe to say Jay Dot Rain is not your everyday "southern" rapper. @pattygotcake: The Dixie Renaissance shows a lot of growth... How is your music different from your previous 3 mixtapes (Cooley Fly Chronicles, Memoirs of a Young Dreamer and Cooley Fly Chronicles 2) ? @jaydotrain: I honestly think that TDR is my most personal. I had to really channel a lot of emotion to make sure people really could relate to the things I was speaking on. All the production, mixing & mastering was A1! I took my time to really create something i'm proud of. @pattygotcake: The South is known for trap music with repetitive beats and cliche lyrics.... As a lyricist how do you plan to capture a southern audience? @jaydotrain: I'm just doing what I can to give the people something they can feel. It's more about substance for me. Trends are cool, and I like a lot of the music that's out now --- but i'm looking for longevity. I'm in it for longevity. @pattygotcake: Top 3 Alabama artist? @jaydotrain: My top Alabama artists: Lil Nardy, Doe B, ST 2 Lettaz @pattygotcake: What's your favorite album of all time? @jaydotrain: I have so many! Jay Z's Black Album, Outkast's Aquemeni, Big KRIT's Krit Wuz Here album... a lot of different ones. @pattygotcake: Who are you currently listening to? @jaydotrain: WDNG Crshrs, Playboy Carti, Ray Rizzle, Scotty ATL, Lil Nardy, again --- it's so many people popping I like right now. @pattygotcake: As an Alabama A&M graduate how did obtaining a Bachelors degree prepare you for the music industry? @jaydotrain: Having my degree has helped me be able to handle business better. Working more on my Time management and just being able to weave out the real BS. It's also helping me be able to network with different people from different ways of life since I'm meeting so many people! @pattygotcake: What inspired you? What makes your story different? @jaydotrain I've always been a dreamer and always believed in myself. For me, music was a no brainer --- it's been in my life forever and once I set my mind to something --- I can't stop until I get it.. my story is far from over. After listening to the Dixie Renaissance my favorite tracks are Box Chevy, Dozen, Like This, Shooter and Play your Cards.
